S.T. Barb repeats in Fall tournament
by Tim Behany October 29, 2013
Tom Novak of Green Brook ran east to Jones Inlet with his S.T.Barb to defend his championship in the Hi-Mar Striper Club’s Fall Striped Bass Tournament out of Bahrs Landing in Highlands as his crew of Jake Campi and Quinn Bolivar trolled Tony Maja bunker spoons for bass of 28.6 and 22.8 pounds– a winning two-fish total of 51.4 pounds. They edged out Al Dudas of Cliffwood on Nauti Boy who had the biggest bass of the contest, a 31.8-pounder off Staten Island — but could only match it with a 17.4-pounder for 49.2 pounds. Gregg and Ryan Taffet of Tinton Falls also ran to Jones Inlet for stripers of 25 and 20.6 pounds to take third at 45.6 pounds on Feeling Crabby. Casey Campi of Little Silver boated bass of 22.6 and 20.4 pounds on Maktac for a 43-pound total and fourth place. Fifth went to Gary Carr of Hazlet on All In after he fished Shrewsbury River for bass of 20 and 17.6 pounds totaling 37.6 pounds. The bonus cash awards for largest bass on Julian’s Montauk bunker spoons went to Feeling Crabby and Maktac — which also had the Lady Angler award for Irene Block with a 22.6-pounder. Steve Webber didn’t win anything on his Reel Lucky, but had the most unusual catch as Jeff Sutton released an estimated 80-pound black drum that hit a trolled shad rig and ran off 300 feet of wire plus almost 300 yards of mono backing.

The annual Hi-Mar Striper Club Spring striper tournament for the benefit of Jason’s Dreams for Kids was held Saturday, June 21st in excellent weather at the Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. Although fuel prices are very high, there were 46 boats entered, one down from last year. There was a slow down in central Monmouth County where big fish were taken for the past 2-3 weeks. The fish moved 25 miles south following large schools of bunker below Seaside Park. Majority of the big fish were caught in this area, 2-3 miles offshore. Asbury Park to The Shark River was previously hot, but very few fish were caught in this area. Only 11 boats weighed-in two fish. The boats that were able to run 60 miles did well this year. Many of the “pro” bass fishermen were shut out in the Monmouth County area. The awards ceremony was followed by a pig roast and other goodies donated to the picnic for the participants and the Hi-Mar members and their families. The real winner was Jason’s Dreams for Kids as a large check was donated to them. Fish weighed in, were filleted and donated to the Monmouth / Ocean Food Bank.
- The largest fish in the tournament was 44.8 lbs. by Rick Nunn, Hillsborough, on Hapi Daze
- The Junior and Female angler prizes went unclaimed.

HI-MAR 2006 SPRING TOURNAMENT RESULTSThe third annual Hi-Mar Spring Tournament was held Saturday, June 3, 2006 for the benefit of Jason’s Dreams for Kids and the Monmouth/Ocean Food Bank. The weather left something to be desired. It was “pea soup” fog in the morning, rough seas at the point of the hook, and torrential down-pours throughout the day, Typical Hi-Mar Tournament weather. Raritan Bay was void of fish, maybe because of the three inches of rain that fell Friday night through Saturday. Most of the fish weighed-in were caught down the beach, as far as, Asbury Park. Tough to get there through fog and rough seas. There were 52 boats entered.

Bass fishing in New Jersey is tough, the weather patterns kept consistent this weekend as it has in for the previous four consecutive weekends, rainy with high winds. The few captains who braved the elements on Friday night were rewarded with a small window of fishing prior to the strong east winds kicking up after 2am. The strong east winds and outgoing tide made conditions treacherous for captains to get to their planed destinations, once the wind and tide worked together the winds were blowing briskly at 25-30kts sustained. As of 6:30pm on Saturday night, the coast guard raised the Gale Force Advisory postponing the tournament, at which time captains had an hour and half to weigh their catch. Captains made the right choice as the winds increased during the day, since no fish were weighed after the 6:30pm Gale advisory was posted and the 8:00pm cut off time to make their fish official for the tournament.
Sunday at 6:30am the tournament resumed as the gale advisory was lowered to small craft. The leader board changed slightly due to the Nauti-boys which took first place in the tournament. Thank you to all participants, I hope to see you all next year starting with the Spring Tournament and again in the fall.

2005 HI-MAR JASON’S DREAMS FOR KIDS SPRING TOURNAMENT RESULTS
With a grim rainy forecast we hosted the 2nd Annual Hi-Mar Striper Club Spring Tournament supporting Jason’s Dream for Kids. We doubled the amount of boats that entered the tournament from the previous year, to a count of 50 entries. The boats that fished had to run in small craft conditions on the ocean for rough seas, but as the day progressed the weather improved, unlike last year. Capt. Bob Kamienski, of the Hi-Mar Striper Club, ran the KingFisher III down the beach to get into a hot bit of multiple bass over 30 pounds, the crew’s top fish of the day took second place in the tournament.
The real winners were Jason’s Dreams for Kids as majority of the entry fees went to them and Monmouth / Ocean Food Bank where the fish weighed were filleted and donated to this organization.Thank you to all the participants that fished hard during this competition, this tournament continues to grew and we look forward to seeing you all again for out 40 hour fall tournament on October 21st – 23rd and in 2006.

HI-MAR 2004 1st ANNUAL SPRING TOURNAMENT RESULTSThe Hi-Mar Striper Club hosted their first Spring Bass Tournament that would benefit Jason’s Dreams for Kids, which is a local charity that grants children that are terminally ill their last wishes. The Hi-Mar Club decided to benefit this organization by donating 40% of the income generated by the tournament. The Hi-Mar Club also used this opportunity to provide the local Monmouth County Food Bank with fish that were donated by participants of the tournament. Thirty five participants entered the tournament despite the grim forecast on Saturday, through out the week big fish have been coming back to the dock from the ocean as the big fish move from their southern locations north along the beach. The Kingfisher had their tournament crew on board to score first place with a 38.3 pound Striper that was caught off Long Branch while doing what they do best, live lining bunker. The ocean was not a pretty place to be, the forecast was suppose to be 10-15 out of the East, which it was early, until late morning when winds picked up to 20-25kts East. The Kingfisher Crew landed their big fish early, with three fish on in the first couple minutes the fish weighed 38, 36, and another 35 pound, what a way to start the day. As more boats showed up fish had moved north, toward the Rocks. Big fish were taken off the Rocks around mid morning where Phil Lidlow on the Dusky and Al Ristori with their Atlantic Yachts Sales Aquasport landed a set of 37+ lbs bass which would place them in second and third place respectively. The members of the Hi-Mar Club worked hard cleaning the participant’s fish before donating the filets to the Monmouth County Food Bank. The club donated three large 160 quart coolers filled with iced down and individually zip-locked filets of fish to the Food Bank. This tournament was a huge success that benefited the local community and Jason’s Dreams, thank you to all who participated in this event and for your generosity.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”2003 Hi-Mar Striper Tournament Results”] The 2003 Hi-Mar Striper Tournament is in the record books. Record books because the first place fish total of 84.8 pounds was a record weight for the two fish tournament, and 47lbs was the largest ever caught in the tournament. First place goes to Captain Harry Svenson on the Cheap Shot. Of the 68 boats entered, only a few fished Friday night as a stiff 20kt north wind blew with driving rain. Saturday it was flat calm until late Sunday morning when the winds again picked up over 20kts. There were a number of weigh-ins with a close battle between 2nd and 5th place. In addition to the places for the tournament we added a Junior and Ladies divisions which made Jesse Mort and Lynn Distel happy with donations from Atlantic Yacht Sales in Middletown.
